FMP: Prison Shanks/Shivs

A weapon commonly found in a prison is a shank, a shank is an object which a prisoner has got from somewhere in the prison, it could be a spoon, pen etc. Who will then alter and warp the object to make it into a dangerous weapon, they will do this by sharpening and scraping one end, thus turning it into a “homemade knife”.

From research of games, film and TV, prisoners seem to hide these homemade weapons on the metal frame of a bed, on their groin, inside a book (usually a bible, as its a sacred book), in a sock and in other places.

With my scene having a riot scene attached to it, I have started to have a look at various items that would be seen and the most probable to be found in such a scene are shanks or shivs. These small assets could be randomly placed within the scene, possibly next to a puddle of blood, inside a book etc. as long as the viewer can see what has happened in the environment just by looking at it.

Some prisons have workshops where prisoners can gain some skills working with wood, metal etc. But in some cases, they use this privilege to create weapons.
