Roger Caillois: Agon, Alea, Illynx, Mimicry

Agon, Alea, Illynx and Mimicry are all categories created by Roger Caillois, these are categories that games can be put into; need it be school yard games, video games, board games, etc.

Agon: Agon describes games that are competitive, nearly all games have this play form; popular one’s would be chess, call of duty, monopoly etc.

Alea: Alea describes games that are a game of chance, so games like poker and slot machines are common games to look at.

Illynx: Games that have a sense of disorientation would be put under this category, games that alter the perception of things. The party game ‘Pin the Tail on the Donkey’ would be a good example as the player is spun around until they’re dizzy and then they have to pin the tail on the donkey which would be difficult.

Mimicry: Games that have a sense of role play or copying would be classed in the Mimicry category. An example of this would be games where you have to take control of a character or you have to create a character to control. Elder Scroll games are a good example, also monopoly would be a good example as you have to choose a character to play with.

Many games fall under multiple categories, an example could be the board game Cluedo; very competitive, mimicry as you are controlling a character and Alea, as you don’t know what’s going to happen.
