Conversion from one gaming platform genre to another

Many games over the last few years have had cross platform features integrated into them as it has become more and more popular with the current generation of gamers. Take Borderlands for an example, this is a role playing game that has first person shooter elements brought deep into it. This type of conversion works very well as you can use the first person shooter elements like shooting enemies to complete a quest and achieve experience from the role playing element.

But there are some games that wouldn’t work if they were converted to another or different genre. Take the Uncharted series for an example, although this is a third person adventure game, if you add another type of genre like RPG elements to it; it wouldn’t work as well. This would be because of the linear story line that the ‘Uncharted’ games are built upon. Having random little missions or quests to level up would not work in such a game as it is very story driven and they almost feel like you’re watching an  interactive movie.

Other video games that have cross-genre elements built into them are:

  • Fallout 3
  • Farcry 3
  • Mass effect
  • Deux Ex
