Video Game Addiction!

Although video games can be fun and time consuming, there are some people in the world that can’t stop playing; these people are called video game addicts, and can be very serious. Game addiction can come from many different circumstances, in most cases the player gets addicted to building and levelling up a certain character like in a MMORPG (World of Warcraft, Runescape) or they get addicted to making towns in a simulation type game (farmville) or building armies and fighting against other people (starcraft).

There has been many cases all over the world of addiction turning into a very serious problem. Below are a few examples of video game addiction turning nasty and making it into the news.

13 yr old WoW Addict

“Xiao Yi was 13 when he jumped from the top of a 24-story building. The note he left behind for his parents was written from the point of view of a video game character. Further, the note detailed his wish to meet three of his gaming friends in the afterlife. His parents asked him, at one point, about his addiction.  He replied that he “had been poisoned by games and could no longer control himself.”

Daniel Petric Kills Mother Over Halo 3

“After his mother and father took Halo 3 away from him, Daniel Petric, 17, unlocked the safe in which they’d hidden it. Also in the safe was a 9mm pistol. He then took the game and the pistol to his parent’s room, asked them to close their eyes because he had a surprise for them, and shot them both in the head.  The father survived with critical injuries, but his mother died instantly.”

After reading through various horrible game addiction stories, I realised that not only do a very limited few take other peoples life’s, they will sometimes take there own life because of this problem.

There has been big arguments around the world because of this problem, discussing whether if it’s the video game causing this behavior or if it’s the person playing the game is the one to blame. In my eyes, I feel it has to the type of person playing the video game, because there are millions and millions of gamers all over the world and a very limited few have taken there anger and addiction problem out on others or themselves, it’s just these types of stories make it into the news because they are unusual and strange.
